Sketch of the 10th Series

Sketch of the Tenth Series by David Morrison, Official Sketch Artist

10th Series – Test Description

The 10th Series of the 2019 National Amateur Retriever Club Championship is a Land/Water Quad with three Retired birds including one island bird.

The mat faces east looking out over a beautiful valley with the Mission Mountain Range in the background. The whole field is dotted with various size mounds and ponds.

Bird 1: Long Retired - This rooster flyer lies in front of the line. The gunners retire behind well-brushed blind behind a medium-sized tree. The gunners shoot a rooster pheasant angled back to the left landing 385 yards from the line. The line to this bird has a large hay bale that has been placed at the base of the mound with the mat. The bale forces the dog either left or right and they must remember where this mark lands or the bale will throw them off their line.

Bird 2: Left Flyer - This hen pheasant is directly off the handler's left shoulder. These gunners come out and shoot this bird flat to the right, landing approximately 208 yards from the line. The line to this bird will take the dog down the mound and over to a smaller mound. The dog will then across a gravel road and then out through a field with medium to heavy cover.

Bird 3: Island Bird - This is a retired gun station left of bird one. The gunners throw a duck that will land on an island 255 yards from the line. The dog must navigate several pieces of water and mounds to get to the island.

Bird 4: Right Flyer - This is the go bird. It is to the right side of the test. These gunners are the only stand out station in this test. The guns will shoot a hen mallard back to the right with the duck landing 315 yards from the line.

This mix bag quad with three retired guns is beautiful to look at, but will be challenging to run. It is expected that the handlers will run this in order of the outside - outside - and leave the two hardest birds for the last. All four of the marks cross some water, although the water can be easily avoided on the left-hand bird.

7th Series - Water Blind

The 7th Series is a Water Blind

We start the 7th Series – Water Blind – with temperatures in the upper 40's, with overcast skies and pockets of rain that will move about throughout the day. Winds are very light at this point.

Our blind is a 305 yards water blind. The line faces northwest into a winding water structure. The line sits on an elevated shoreline and will drop into the depression. From the line the dog will not see the first 75 yards.

The dog is sent and will drop down on a wider shoreline. Staying right and on the shore for about 75 yards, then it will enter a cove. Then the dog will swim across to a point coming out from the left. Re-enter the water passing a point on the right and getting up on the next point coming out from the left. Another re-entry into a winding channel and cross the next point on the right. The dogs will then re-entry the channel again, swim to the shore to exit and have a short run out to pick up their bird.

This test will take approximately 7-8 minutes per dog.

Series 6 - Problem Fixed

There is a fence at the far end of the field behind the long retired gun. This fence was re-enforced with dog-proof panels. Dog #14 was able to go through a place where the panels overlapped and this is the place that was re-enforced and fixed.

Dog #14 will have a re-run at the end of the rotation.

6th Series - Land Quad with 2 Flyers and 2 Retired

The temperatures are around 60 degrees this morning with a wind at 9 mph and building. Our skies are cloudy.

The 6th Series is a Land Quad with 2 Flyers and 2 Retired

The line sits atop a round knob that over looks an un-mowed grassy valley with areas of heavier grass. There is a stream that meanders through the bottom. At the far end and well beyond the gunners is a fence and road.

The first bird is the long retired gun station is two men who retired to a holding blind left of the stream at the base of the valley. A dead duck is thrown across the stream at 350 yards.

Second we have a three man duck flyer station on the right side of the valley slope is shooting a duck at 307 yards.

Our third short retired gun is a dead hen pheasant that stands atop the ridge and retires to the back side of it. The throw is a flat throw down the hill at 157 yards.

The last bird is a three man station that shoots a hen pheasant from the top of the valley, lofting the bird to the right so the bird lands on top of the knob at 90 yards.

The gun rotation is after 47, 72 and 107.

Series 5 - Land Blind with Double Sluice

The 5th Series is a 224 yard Land Blind with water in it and a Double Sluice. The mat faces east and a strong wind is hitting the handlers on the back of their right shoulder.

The mat looks out on a kidney shaped pond with two gunners at the far right shore on the far end. The line to the bird takes the dog about 70 yards down to a narrow strip of water. They then cross this water and get onto a large land bridge. They stay to the right of the tules and some logs that are laying on the shore. The will then get back into the second piece of water and swim parallel to the shore to a point where the bird is planted.

This test is taking about 4 - 4.5 minutes. The points the handler needs to be aware of are...

1. To the first part of the water
2. The second piece of water that includes the tules and logs
3. Re-entry to the bird

Day Two of the Fourth Series

We are back at Freedom Fields at the "Winsom Ponds" for the second day of the Fourth Series. When we arrived it was 59 degrees with gray skies and a southern breeze 3 mph. The guns all show up and after test throws, it was determined that all guns and birds were visible.

The Fourth Series is comprised of a Water Triple with a duck flyer and two retired birds with an honor. The order of the birds are long retired rooster, middle retired duck and the right hand duck flyer.

The test faces southwest looking out on a gently sloping field. there are two ponds that wind their way through the field with a smaller piece of water or two dotting the lands. The mat is on the high side of the field which is covered with moderate cover and strips of thicker cover.

Bird One: Long Retired - A dead rooster thrown to the left landing 400 yards from the line. These two guns stand on a mound with heavy cover, covering the mound from left to right, with water in front of it. The dog must cross a field, a piece of the pond, more field and then another piece of the water to this bird which lands on the near side of the cover.

Bird Two: Middle Retired - A dead duck. These two guns are standing on a mound behind very heavy cover. The guns throw the duck to the left where it lands 270 yards from the line. The line to this bird is across the field, then a swim in the pond and an exit to the near side of the cover for the bird.

Bird Three: Right Flyer - These two guns stand to the right of the line. They shoot a duck angle back to the right, where it lands in moderately heavy cover. The dog may or may ot catch the end of the pond as they travel 125 yards from the line to get this bird.

There is an honor to the right of the mat.
